Compaq provide a software patch 'SP2345.EXE' to fix the problem. The patch is available on Compaq’s WWW on http:/compac.emea.net
SOFTPAQ NUMBER: SP2345
Solution
Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive, for example C:\UTIL, and change to that directory. The file that is downloaded is SP2345.EXE.
From that drive and directory, execute the SoftPaq file: SP2345 [ENTER]
The following files should be created:
PRNTUPD4.EXE
SP2345.DOC
After the files are created, you may delete the downloaded file SP2345.EXE if you wish.
From the Start/Run menu, type in C:\<Directory>\PRNTUPD4.
This automatically updates the LPT.VXD on your system.

DESCRIPTION: Creates the executable PARLLDMA.EXE, which allows a user to enable or disable DMA on the parallel port of the above mentioned computers. When this program is executed without parameters at the DOS command prompt, it first reports whether it is able to run on the current computer. If it is, it reports whether the parallel port DMA is enabled or disabled. It can then be run with parameters to enable or disable DMA, either from the command line or from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
